The reference to El Koran might offend Turkish listeners and the record was banned, but it could be performed live with an amended lyric. Lonnie was dumbfounded by this ban as he could find nothing offensive in the line. Will such bannings affect Lonnie’s future repertoire in any way? “Definitely not! I don’t aim my recordings at the BBC and I have no intention of sorting out material that couldn’t possibly offend.”

Thanks wolf63 & scorpiojo
I'm enjoying going through that list Jo :))

George Formby's 'when I'm cleaning windows' - who'd have thought that eh? All his songs were just as bad.... and funny too.
Strange that 'The house of the rising sun' by Josh White was banned in 1946, reason given was lyrics about prostitution yet the Animals version wasn't banned.
:))))
Wondered why it stopped at 1959 - just noticed that they are on 78s (bless their souls). But surely in mid to late 50s they were on 45s by then?
I'm not old enough to know that :)
Pull the other one Jo, it plays Annie Laurie. (legs it quickly)
Run fast....
..and who's Annie Laurie?
Have you never heard of that phrase Jo? Don't know who she was but in Lancashire it is a saying that means 'are you having me on?' ie 'I can't believe that'
Never heard it before, Captain
