What's the most amazing fiction book you've read? I'm just getting back into reading, and I need some suggestions. They can be any genre - comedy, thriller, fantasy, horror, I'll even consider romance. I just want something that'll blow me away.

Thanks.

recently-

definitely to kill a mockingbird

recently kazuo ishiguro never let me go- could NOT put it down

and absolutely anything by john fowles- the collector if you fancy a bit of a psychological thriller

Northern Lights- Philip Pullman-The first in a fantasy trilogy(strictly speaking a children's book-but very inventive)

A heftier read but something a little bit different is

-The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

An evangelical minister takes his wife and four daughters to 1950's Belgian Congo

I have so many favourite books. I now try to read as many different generes as I can. Favourites include:

John Steinbeck: The Grapes of Wrath, Aldous Huxley:Brave New World, Bram Stoker: Dracula, John Wyndem: The Midwitch Cuckoos.

I recently purchased "1001 books to read before you die" and can recommend this as a great guide.

Chris

To kill a mockingbird- Harper Lee
Hi squiggle, Try 'Catch 22', I never tire of re-reading it, always brings a chuckle. Then again, what about all the Flashman books? There's culture for you.
james herbert horror books are good

Waimarie is spot on Catch - 22 is awesom but anything by Joseph Heller, esp. the much slated Catch - 22 follow up which I think is called Closing Time.

Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad ( inspired the film Apocolypse Now )

Diamond Age - Neil Stephenson (sci-fi with a twist, v. well written)

On the Road - Jack Kerouac (the classic beat novel)

Or if u just fancy a laugh try anything by Terry Pratchet

Jennifer Government by Max Barry
Captain Corelli's Mandolin - Louis De Bernieres (the ending was a bit naff, but otherwise a really great read!)

Love in the time of Cholera- Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The Beach - ...?

Memoirs of a Geisha- Arthur Golden

Some of these are a bit heavy - if you want something light and easy to read that will make you cry with laughter try "Second from last in the sack race" by David Nobbs. If you like that there are a couple of sequels too..

Each to their own-but here goes

Charlie

oops hit the wrong button there!

Charlie Williams,DEADFOLK,FAGS AND LAGER,KING OF THE ROAD,

Ray Banks- THE BIG BLIND,THE SATURDAY BOY

Allan Guthrie-KISS HER GOODBYE,THE TWO-WAY SPLIT

Elmore Leonard ANYTHING

John Irving- A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY

Jodie Picoult's books are really amazing. try Salem falls or The Pact.
or Lovely Bone's by Alice seabold.
