I have got a bissell and am very pleased with it.
I should add, you want one that you put water and detergent in and is sprays it out and sucks it up, NOT the steamer kind
I have a Vax Rapide and its brilliant.
I agree with knitnat - the Vax Rapide is excellent, especially when used with their Ultra+pet shampoo.
Better to rent a Rug Doctor occasionally
The only thing with renting a machine is that you HAVE to do it on the rental day and do everything at once otherwise it gets expensive. I can pull mine out and do bits here and there as and when. I have used the rug doctor as well as my bissell and don't think that there is any difference in the results, also the rug doctor is much heavier to use.
