Hi All,
I recently had a blood test done and I have been told I have raised serum ferritin, what could be the possible reasons this might have happened and how can I get my Iron levels back to normal

I was also told that my liver function is satisfactory, A while back certain levels where high, but this has improved.

My diet is not always great, it chops and changes. I do take 250mg of Magnesium a day.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Not my area of expertise.....slaney is the best opinion on your problem.

There is little point in giving you a list of causes of a high ferriitin levels or even a link to a website which would confuse us all.....me in particular.

I f it is markedly raised, your GP would refer you to a specialist for further investigation, but from what you have said, it is not so and hence no need to worry. There is little that you can do at this moment except not to worry and overuse your imagination, as i am sure that this is no big deal.
Do you have the actual values of your serum ferritin?

Hi Sqad,

Thank you for the fast response to my question. I rang my doctors surgery, but the receptionist said they are not allowed to give out values for the blood tests without my doctors permission.

I am now more concerned as the supposed satisfactory liver function test does not sound good after speaking to another receptionist. She said my Gamma GT and either my Ast or Alt (cant remember which one she said as I was flusterd) are out of normal ranges.

They said another Iron test and Esr have been requested, I see my doctor on friday.

That is an excellent move, the repeat iron test will confirm that your initial test was a "rogue" test and the ESR will indicate if there is "anything going on".

The liver function tests are a concern and may be linked to your ferritin levels. However if the repeat serum ferritin comes back within normal limits, then you have nothing to worry about.

Hi Sqad,

I managed to get my liver function test levels.

my Gamma GT is 92 (I was told normal range is 11-50)
my Alt is 76 (I was told normal range is 40)

What would this indicate, I am kind of stressing now :(
I don't know much about your alcohol intake, but those liver function tests may indicate a liver damaged by alcohol......although there may be less common causes. if this is so, then that "might " explain your raised ferritin levels.

Lets wait until Friday eh?

The problem is I dont drink, I did eat a lot of fatty food (improved my diet somewhat but will do more) and during my last ultrasound they did say I had some fat infiltration.

I understand that the liver is great at healing itself is this correct ?

I just want to say I am very grateful for your help Sqad. I don't mean to go on, it's just that I get anxious very easily.

I will wait until friday and see what happens.

LOL.....so they say,Soul, so they say....but if it has been insulted by alcohol, food or other disorders and it has crossed the Rubicon, then there is not turning back for the liver.
Fatty infiltration could be a cause for your abnormal LFTs.
