Keyboard/mouse Conflict

After replacing the original mouse and keyboard on my Windows 8 Compaq the new mouse worked perfectly, and when I changed the keyboard it started disconnecting randomly and often crashed the browser requiring sleep and wakeup to fix it, and made the mouse intermittent as well. I've done all the driver and hardware checks and reinstalled them but as soon as I put the old keyboard back it all works perfectly. I suspect it's software related otherwise the keyboard would have been like that from day one, plus it crashed the PC entirely when I put the new one in but was perfect when I restarted it all.

Update, the new keyboard won't work at all now although recognised by the PC and the light remains on. But I noticed although it looks perfect the USB plug doesn't go all the way into the sockets all the others do. I don't think that can be fixed and is probably creating a partial connection.
