Please does anyone know the approximate cost either one way or return from Pisa central station to Siena, think have to change at Empoli?

Also can I pay on the train or do I have to buy tickets at station or in advance - don't really want to book in advance in case flights are late?

I've only travelled once on Italian Railways three or four years ago. That time I had to buy a ticket at the station - you then Verify it by putting it in a machine at the station which time-stamps it. For the return journey you Verify the ticket at a machine at the station before you travel. There are ticket inspectors on the trains which check that you have Verified the ticket.
