I need to provide a visual screen between my patio and my neighbours garden. The screen needs to be about 2 metres wide and 2.5/3 metres high. My thoughts are to grow bamboos in two 1 metre troughs, placed end to end. Is my idea feasible and if yes what types of bamboo would do the job. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Your bamboo screen idea looks feasible to me, and keeping the roots contained is also a good idea, as the roots can be very invasive. I would go for troughs that are fairly deep, about a foot would be ideal. Provide some gravel in the bottoms for good drainage, then infill with a general purpose compost. Use a slow release pelleted fertilizer every six months....

Use a slow release pelleted fertilizer every six months.

suitable species might be : Arundinaria bashrinia or Bambusa chusquea, plus several more you might consider.
I was thinking about something like that malana, how long does it take to grow approx 1 metre?
It grows like the clappers once it's established - mine grows about 3 inches a day!
Thanks boxtops, is it ok to plant the seeds now?
I've never used seeds, trt - initially I bought a small plant, now I propagate it from runners from the original plant. Do you want me to send you some?
Gosh boxtops, thats very kind of you, and yes of course I would.

How do we swap contacts, and how will I pay for the postage etc?

Are you on FB?
Hi trt, email me on my throwaway [email protected]
Here's an interesting fact : According to the 'Guiness world records' the fastest growing plant is a species of bamboo, that has been recorded at a rate of 91cm (35in) per day! or if you prefer 0.00002 mph.
