Citreon Ds3 Started Chugging ....what Could Be Wrong ?

i have 3 year old ds3, never had a problem with it untill yesterday driving it started chugging and sputtering, i thought it was a flat tyre then i thought it was fuel not getting through .

i know nothing about cars, maybe due a good service with filters changed ?

i do admit i used red diesel in it an odd time, but not much.

Well Dick, you keep on asking on AB what is the point of spending money on service/oil change. It looks like you've just found out for yourself.
Most likely a fuel problem. If it's only filters blocked you are lucky. If gunk has made it past filters (due to filters being overloaded with gunk) it may have damaged injectors, BIG COST.
If the water trap hasn't been drained and water has got through once again BIG COST.
If engine oil hasn't been changed often then DPF's (if your car has one) can be damaged, BIG COST.

I'd suggest regular servicing, much cheaper than major repairs.
also check for mayo on the oil cap, if the gaskets are gone small amounts of water can get into the cylinders and retard clean burning if the oil and water have mixed that is an indication that water has also infiltrated combustion chamber.
Only four weeks ago you said that £70 was too much for a service. So you have also ran it on red diesel, besides that being illegal, you are decanting fuel from a dubious source and wonder why the car gives you trouble.
You are running a fairly late car, having gone to the expense of buying it why not protect your investment and get it serviced.
If you are lucky it will only cost you a fuel filter... and if you aren't all the money you have saved neglecting it may not pay for the repairs.

servicing would help even on this age of car, hubbys car is a 2003 and still maintained every year, also as others have said using the red diesel could have caused problems

Incidentally, you've had this car long enough to get the manufacturer's name spelt correctly......
It has previously broken down with smoke coming from the exhaust. As I recall there was a discussion with a traffic warden as DD pulled over onto white zigzags :-(
I'll bet that your fuel filter is clogged ( with wax probably ). It needs servicing !.
DD, you are clearly not mechanically minded if you associated chugging and spluttering with a possible flat tyre!

The car must be due an MOT and getting serviced beforehand would be a very good idea as it has been somewhat neglected since you purchased it and sorting out any issues beforehand could save you a lot of inconvenience.

Many years ago, I suffered what I believed was rough engine running, due to fuel starvation (which it proved to be). In 4th gear at 30 mph the engine would be running OK, but try to accelerate beyond this and the engine would run very rough.

In the end, I found a blocked fuel filter within the fuel tank, a part not listed within the vehicle’s full service manual.

So if it is fuel starvation (due to a blocked filter, or whatever), I would expect you to experience smoother running at lower engine fuel consumption.

With the engine running rough, I’m surprised that the on board diagnostics has not illuminated a warning light, which could be read using the correct equipment to diagnose the fault.

ok, getting it serviced. ive been abusing and neglected this car since i bought it so i know now to take your advice.

I have just purchased a car off a person that loved his car ( As he put it) 2008 Peugeot hdi, he thought he was saving money by using CHEAP out of old 5 gallon drums, the drums were contaminated with whatever rubbish that had been in the drums, the car had broken down & he did not have the money to sort it out, I bought it & fully sorted with new injectors, kerosene through the system for 1hr to clean out the system, for a £3600 car if bought on the market, it cost me a total of £1700 to put right, the person though he was saving money! was he D.D. I'm afraid he paid the price, false economy I think.
