Can anyone advise best part of Tel Aviv to base oneself for a holiday? Would like to hear from previous travellers with advice and tips.

what sort of holiday? Beach, base for sightseeing?

Beach and cultural. Half and half.
I've never stayed there overnight but there are lots of hotels on the beach; if nobody comes through with personal recommendations you could plough through Tripadvisor

Tel Aviv is probably the least historic place in Israel, but it's a small country and everything's in fairly easy reach. In particular, Jerusalem's only an hour away (I think you have to be there in the morning if you want to visit the Dome of the Rock, which you should if you can).
The area where the Intercontinental David is is a good spot for getting to everything.
