I have been owrking for the same company for 14 years.
My passport was orginally on file, but this has now expired and i have not renewed it. So they have requested by birth certificate which i have today provided however they have said that this is not good enough as it is only a 'small' one and i need the larger one. This is the only certificate i have ever had, so i now have to apply for a bigger one at £10, which they are not going to re-imbuse. Has anyone else had this? apprently it is an immigration thing that the govenment require. I don't understand why they have had by Previous passport, national insurance number and driving licence do they now need to prove that i am english with my birth certificate.

yes its an immigration thingy, I had to produce my passport about 6 years ago when still employed, I also was a long term employee, but they impose large fines now if you employ illegals, at least 4 people made a hasty retreat when asked. They will take a photocopy to keep on file in case they get an unannounced inspection.
Tell them that the short one is a legal document and is sufficient proof. Ask them for written proof showing the company policy for requiring the long birth certificate.
Stand your ground!
Same here, employers need a copy of birth certificate to keep on file.
