which came first the keyboard and/or calculator numeric keyboard or the pushbutton telephone? If the telephone was second what bright spark decided to put the numbers in a different format? !!

There is actually a reason for it but I can't for the life of me remember what it is.

not a definative answer I'm afraid as there doesn't seem to be one.
I think you will find that when the typewriter was invented (it was 2 men but I can't remember their names) the central keys - asdf etc - were put were they were because they were the most commonly used. Seems a pretty logical step to me.
