My daughters old car is taxed but off the road and never used as she drives her husbands 4x4.She has comprehensive 1nsurance on her car and uses that for third party cover when driving the 4x4.It saves her around £400 on insurance.
Her old car will soon need tax renewal, instead of renewing the road tax could she submit a SORN declaration without it affecting the insurance.

it is not legal to insure an old banger and "use" that insurance to drive another car. She is not insured.

Bednobs the old banger is still roadworthy. She contacted the insurance company about driving the 4x4 and they said yes its covered by her insurance but only for third party.
Assuming her husband's car is insured, I'm not convinced that Bednobs is right. If her husband's car is insured, wouldn't it be cheaper to have her as a named driver?
Apart from that I don't see why her car having a SORN will make any difference. The sensible option is to ask her insurance company as getting it wrong could be very costly.
Crossed posts there Whistonian. Bear in mind that third party does NOT cover fire and theft. In other words, if it's stolen whilst she is in charge of it there is no cover.
also comp insurance does not automatically mean you can drive another car with the owners permission. If it does not say it on her certificate she is not insured. Yes she can submit a SORN it won't make any difference. I assume this arrangement is to preserve NCD or it would be better to have her as a named driver on her husbands insurance.

Yes bhg481 her husband has a comprehensive insurance on the 4x4 .Not sure why she isn't a named driver on it,must check that out.
Question Author
Your correct TTT,it is to protect her NCD.
well i stand corrected, sorry for Duff information :) perhaps i am thinking that you can't do this if you yourself are the owner of both cars.
Your NCD can be held for a couple of years if you don't have a car. Why pay for two lots of insurance when you can pay for one and a bit extra to be a named driver? Also, if you're a named driver, you're fully comprehensive.
Interestingly it can be cheaper to have 2 drivers on a policy than just one, so having a named driver can cost you less rather than more.
