And behind the newsreader there's a glass screen and people get up and shuffle around? Aren't they told "This is a news broadcast so no one moves for 3.5 minutes under threat of being fired for disrupting a live airwave broadcasting" or something like that?

No
I don't think you can expect a news organisation to just stop collecting the news for half an hour while it's being broadcast. Why they don't screen them off is another question, but I expect they're trying to prove to the culture secretary that they don't just sit around doing nothing all day.
I do find it surprising that the people seem to make no allowance for the fact that they're on live TV. They seem to be lounging around and yawning, scratching their nuts etc exactly as they would if they were completely unobserved. It doesn't bother me though.
It's part of the effect, it's something that is done historically, if they were bothered about viewers seeing people in the back ground they'd be doing the news in front of a designed back drop.
Totally distracting.......sometimes annoying.......not necessary in my opinion.........AND...they know when they can be seen as they stare at the studio.
Could they not put a screen behind the newsreader?
It's been like that for years. Can't really see the problem with it.
I remember Frank Bough on Grandstand with a cast of millions.
David Coleman on the teleprinter, etc etc. Great days :-)
I think I'd find a larger-than-life picture of Eric Pickles for example a lot more distracting, and I personally find plain backgrounds a bit dull....

Where I do have an issue is with weather forecasters getting all dolled up: very distracting, when we're all supposed to be looking at the map.
There is a case for a hijab I think.
Doesn't bother me in the slightest.
French & Saunders did a sketch on their show in the 80s or 90s where they were working at their desks behind the newsreader "I think I'll stand up and go to the photocopier. Well I would, wouldn't I?" and then they started sharing their sandwiches before they were asked to leave. Sometimes I worry about the things that stick in my mind....
When john luggie beard is doing his first thing theres a guy out mowing his lawn in the back ground ,don't bother me in the least wish he would come round and do mine
The people in the office are probably really annoyed that there's always someone reading the news in background when they're trying to work.
