ive just set up a second hand tank to keep fresh water tropical fish in pump and tank are fine but not sure on the heater should the light stay on all the time or is it sperodic my one keeps going off, the temperature has gone up slightly from when it was first filled but didn't think it would take so long to warm up, its been on 24 hours now and is at 72f is this normal or do i have a dodgy heater, there arn't any fish in the tank at the moment as i want to get water right first.

Sounds like you either have a dodgy heater or one that isn't powerful enough to heat your tank (do you know the wattage of it ?)


Usually, with all modern day heaters, there's a built in thermostat which cuts the heater out once a certain temp has been reached....and turns it on at the lower end of the scale.


It's worth spending an extra �20 to get a new heater...second hand ones can be dodgy and your fish will rely on the heat to keep them alive.
