Have just laid my supper plate on my keyboard and the screen has suddenly gone dim. Tried powering down but no difference. Any help? (Windows 8)

I'd suggest you've put your plate on the brightness button. On my laptop it's F5 on the top row (for example)

Laptop or desktop (or something else)?

(A laptop screen will often go dimmer, as power-saving measure, if the plug from the AC power adapter becomes dislodged from its socket).

laptop. Most odd. Pulled the plug out and it brightened up (on battery). Stuck the plug back in again and it reverted to dim.

Have I inadvertently hit a key combination causing this? If so, what is the solution?

Sorry, methyl, crossed posts.

HP Pavilion. Everything in place. As I said, if I disconnect and run on battery it is fine.

Prudie, what a clever girl you are! That's exactly what I have done, except on my PC it's on f3. Thank you all.

Advice duly noted, Methyl. Feel such a prat now. If only laptops came with a booklet telling you what the flaming symbols stood for!
