I like to think of myself as a relatively good cook, but, I just cannot cook rice, so I bought a microwave rice steamer, guess what, I still can't cook rice :(

Does anyone use one of these things and have success?

yes, use uncle bens or american easy cook. on the hob, use two volumes of water to one of rice plus salt or a stock cube if you like. salt or stck cube and water in the pan and bring to the boil. add the rice, bring back to the boil, cover tightly and turn off the heat cover with a tea towel and leave it alone for 20 minutes. fork through and serve.

Woof, that's how I do it, it just turns out crap.

I'll give the wholegrain rice a bash, never had it before. Will let you know how I get on.
You can buy frozen rice :)
What do you eat with your rice, rocky?
Question Author
Curry, chilli, and I do like to stir fry it with some veg etc.

At the moment I buy the Tilda packets that go in the microwave but it does make a meal quite expensive.
Tesco do there own microwave rice that is perfectly good Rocky. Aldi and Lidl too.
It does sound like you're over cooking it.

Try co-op's basmati rice. You don't need to rinse it. Just put it a saucepan and add enough boiling water to cover it, bring back to the boil, stir once, lid on and simmer. Keep an eye on it as sometimes it needs topping up.

Put it on the lowest heat you have.
Then I would definitely recommend wholegrain. It is quite expensive, though.
The Tilda one is £4.00 per kilo but well worth it, I think.

I tried Tesco micro rice once, it was horrible and went straight in the bin.

I'll try that Ummm, I'm sure I'll balls it up though ;)

We'll be all riced out in Chez Racoon by the end of next week.
If you must use microwavable rice, I've used Tilda occasionally and it's ok. Some varieties better than others. Just 2mins too.
We've got a Jamie Oliver rice cooker. Works perfectly every time in the microwave.

What quantities do you use Jayne, and how long do you cook for?
You must rinse the rice many times until the water runs clear before you cook it, its the rice flour that causes the stickyness, then work out the water v rice, normally one cup of rice to two of water, enough for two people, microwave it covered for 10 mins, then stir, check how much water left, if none, add another cupful, micro for another 6 mins, check thats its not still wet, if it is wet, cook for further two mins uncovered, then let stand uncovered for a few minutes. give a stir around with a fork. works for me with any rice, asda or expensive.
annienigma if you buy uncle bens or american easycook, no need for all the rinsing and faff
Yes rocky, I have one, mine's a small beige bucket with a red clip on lid, and makes perfect rice every time. I always use Tilda rice, both brown and basmati, I don't rinse the rice, and never have a problem with either. Are you using too much water and cooking it for too long perhaps?

Mine cooker sounds like it's the same as your's Eth, I followed the instructions in the box.

1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water (though the instructions said 5), put it in microwave for 10 mins and it was still watery, did another 2 minutes and it was glue.

This is one I bought. Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
Yes, that's the one rocky.
In my instructions it says place one and a half/two cups of water to one cup of rice and micro on full power for 8/10 minutes. I always make double so use two cups of rice and four of water, bung it in for ten minutes, have a look and a stir the bung it in for another minute or two. I then leave it to stand while I faff around, probably for anything up to 15 minutes.
When I use brown rice I do it for 18 minutes for the same double quantity.
Five cups of water to one of rice is waaay too much, it doesn't say that in my instructions.
Question Author
Actually Eth, I got that wrong, it was 5 cups of water to 2 cups of rice, which I still think is too much. I'll try your way and let you know how I get on.
