We have a large toothpaste lid that has gone down the plug hole providing a perfect fit to stop water going down the sink. Dripping tap has now flooded the bathroom/kitchen ceiling.

How the hell do you remove the lid? It seems to be stuck under a small metal bar. We've tried putting holes in the lid, using pliers, strewing drivers but to no avail.

Any ideas please?

Got any tin snips, you could snip a bit off at a time?

I don't quite understand how this happened, is there no grille on the top of your plug hole?

I think the end result will be to call a plumber tomorrow, I know I would.....
You say it's stuck under a small metal bar, which sounds suspiciously like the "actuating rod" to lift and lower the sink stopper… rather like this:

If that's the case, simply remove the spring clip (first diagram for location) by squeezing it together and then unscrew the other end of it from the drop down pipe. It will then easily be removed. Problem is, the toothpaste lid will likely then fall into the "P" trap (as it's known here in the U.S.

Hopefully, yours is easily taken apart, if it's made from PVC… often just finger tight. If not, you'll need some large pliers or a basin wrench to disconnect it if its metal.

Luck!
Can you send us a pic, its a bit confusing.
For anyone who has the same problem (which just happened to me) I heated up a metal kebab skewer with a match for 30 seconds and then stabbed the plastic lid with it (and used a hammer to get more force) then yanked it out.
