I've been using two eyes and a brain .....seems to work for me (and we had two identical cars...one petrol, one diesel and no mishaps!)
I have seen a sticker you put on near the fuel inlet pipe, think it was in the local Pound shop

Yes, you can remove it. I looked into getting one when I put petrol in my diesel car but they don't do one for a Citroen C4. I was so annoyed with myself that I swear I'll never do it again!

The brain, but it must be switched into "concentrate upon what you are doing" mode. Seriously though, why do so many people manage to put the wrong fuel in when there's only a choice of petrol and diesel anyway?
My employers have about 6,000 vans on the road. They are all fitted with Fuel Angels. This stops you from putting the wrong fuel in the tank and it also stops anyone from syphoning it out again.
They sound like a good idea but I wouldn't have one if they gave them away for free.
They are really difficult to use and you will struggle to fill up with one in place. Before I got a new van, (which had one fitted when it arrived and you cant remove them) I used to put in around £60 quids worth in 2 minutes.
Since I got this van it can take 8-10 minutes to put £30 quids worth in the tank. I end up giving up and driving away with the tank half empty. So now I make at least 2 trips to the garage every week. Not to mention that I am usually covered in diesel by the time I finish as it keeps blowing back even when you are trying to fill up really slowly.
Avoid at all costs and put a sticker above the filler.
Put a sticker on the dash panel on front of you, put a Large Keg Tag with derv on it, Think before you fill, think before you fill, think before you fill, think of the cost before you fill.
