Mobile Phone Sim problem

For some reason, my mobile keeps showing the error message 'Insert SIM'. I've tried taking it out, and putting it back again, but the phone just refuses to accept that the sim is in. What could be the cause of this problem, and how can I fix it?

does windows automatically reinstall hardware at start up?

Is it the sim card you got with phone you are trying to put in? If not the phone is locked to a different network and will need to be unlocked.
