I have recently moved to an area that has a very poor mobile phone signal. I am on 3. Basically we live in the back of beyond ! I can only get a signal if my phone is placed in a strategic place, is never moved and only used on loudspeaker because daren't move it for fear of losing signal which is becoming rather tedious. I have heard there are booster aerials whereby these are placed externally with a receiver box inside. Other than that I know nothing else. Can anyone please help me before I throw the damn thing through the window. Cheers

You can go online and check all the different mobile providers and see which one gives a good signal for your area and then change to whichever is good, if any. You just have to enter your post code.
This would be perfect for your problem but I haven't heard of anyone using it...

that's the problem, none of them are any good for where we actually live but are sound for the rest of the county etc hence the need for a booster. Hopefully there may be something out there but thanks anyway furrypusscat

thanks Jomlett but I am on 3 so not compatible. I am only on 3 because its the best signal for the rest of the area :(
ukmobilecoverage.co.uk/network/

This lists all providers, just select each and enter postcode.
Sorry was called away and only just seen your answer.
Have you tried a dongle????
My son has just moved, his new house is right 'in the sticks' no mobile signal. He has had to go back to a land line and even that has to be BT as there is no cable network there.
I do not see how you can boost the signal. You don't have a licence to transmit on the frequency so it's all in the hands of the licenced provider. What you can do is check the reviews for handsets that show better reception ability, and as others have suggested go with a service provider who has the best strength network in the area. If you are already on that one all you can reasonably do is encourage them to improve further I guess. But if it is best and others are not having issues it may well be your handset. Or you could move !
Maybe you can volunteer to have a mini transmitter on your roof to serve the the local area.
^^ Yes some models of phones do definitely have better reception than others on the same network.
An old trick I used when our town was flooded and power lost was to use the mobile beside the TV aerial, the local masts were all off, it did work.
I was with 3 and, like you, had to dangle out of the window to get a signal.

After contacting 3 to find a solution, they sent me a booster box which I plugged into the back of my wifi receiver. Hey presto, 5 bars all the time.

Good luck.
