Naomi...you are missing the point. UKIP needs to get rid of its loony reputation. This idiot shouldn't have mentioned Hitler at all, unless it was to completely and unequivocally condemn him. But he went ahead anyway and he showed a lack of judgement in so doing. Its the lack of common sense and judgement which is at issue here. Is it any wonder that this sort of thing surfaces every few weeks about UKIP ?

Of course Naomi...we don't always agree but I would never call you a Nazi supporter. If that was the impression I gave by mistake, then I apologise.
One thing I have never really understood about Hitler and Germany of the 1930's and 1940's. Even if the German people were not aware of the Holocaust, they did know that Germany invaded and conquered Norway, Denmark, Holland, France, Austria, Greece, etc, etc. How on earth could they have thought that invading all those innocent countries was a "good thing" ?
Germany was full of educated people, not ignorant savages, and yet they closed their eyes to so much that went on in their name. The BBC did some marvelous programs a few years ago, about the rise of the Nazis and the Holocaust in particular and it turned out that many did know about the gas ovens but didn't act. German citizens gleefully rounded up their Jewish neighbours and turned them in to the Gestapo and the SS. Even taking into account the mesmerising presence of Hitler, its still difficult to see how so many millions of people were taken in by such errant wickedness.

Zacs...good post ! People need to wake up and smell the coffee as far as UKIP is concerned. If people really want to come out of Europe, then they shouldn't be wasting their votes on a Party that cannot achieve that withdrawal. They should be voting Tory, for its only the Tories that have the power to sever our links with Brussels. But every vote for UKIP is another nail in daves coffin, so I suppose I shouldn't complain !

One of the German guards in my father POW camp warned: dont be too much of a naughty boy - there are much more unpleasant places we can send you to....
did he mean Colditz or a concentration camp ? altho the Germans were warned they would be shot if they sent POWs to concentration camps, some did end up there... [ and the senders were shot]
just thought I would add a bit of oral testimony to those paying homage to Hitler's magnetic oratory

I'm not too sure what the Grauniad article is supposed to wake me up to, Zacs. It tells me nothing that I do not already know.
What I was trying to emphasise (and perhaps did not do too well) is that the policies expounded by UKIP generally (but with one or two exceptions as there would be with any package) make perfect sense to me. The opposite of those policies are those that you would expect to be formulated by fruitcakes, loonies and the unhinged.
Of those proposals that I mentioned (and I have not been selective, I think I included all that were listed) perhaps you'd be kind enough to help me out a little by explaining which of them you would expect to come from loonies and fruitcakes and which of them you believe are best suited to the unhinged.

The article I linked to highlights the fact that UKIP have no other policies than those to do with immigration. If you want to support a party which has the following agenda then 'unhinged' seems to fit the bill:
1. ‘Businesses should be allowed to refuse services to women and gay people’
2. Gerard Batten MEP demanded British Muslims sign a commitment to abstain from violence and extremism
3. Councillor David Silvester blames UK storms and floods on gay marriage laws
4. Nigel Farage: ‘working mothers are worth less than men’
5. Godfrey Bloom calls a room full of women ‘sluts’ and then slaps a reporter
6. Godfrey Bloom (again) speaks against sending aid to ‘bongo bongo land’
7. Farage was undone when asked about his own manifesto on the BBC. The policies include compulsory uniforms for taxi drivers, giving MPs more freedom with their expenses, making the Circle Line into a real circle, repainting trains in traditional colours and having a maximum of three foreign players in British football teams. (Im not making this up…UKIP are.)

9. Launching themselves as the ‘Black Independence Party’ in Wales
10. Election candidate Alex Wood pictured in a Nazi style salute
