I have two PC's in the house. One is mine, and one my sons.
We can both play Battlefield 4 online with no problem. However. If he is playing BF4, and I load a certain web page such as Ebay,Answerbank or Daily mail his ping goes to 999 making it impossible to play.
I am with AOL, and have a DGN2200 router. My sons PC is hard wired as I thought that wireless may have been the problem.
Our connection speed is only just over 300kbs, sometimes less. I know this is low, but as I say, we can both play online at the same time together.

The game only needs to send a small packet of information, containing the coordinates of all the players and what they're doing. All the game graphics are generated by the player's PC.
When you download a web page which is packed with photos and animated adverts, a 0.3Mb connection is going to 'pause' for well over 1 second while all the parts of the page are loaded. Your son's conputer has to wait its turn for its next data packet. The router makes no difference since you only have 1 phone line.
Interesting. Since I don't play on line games I was wondering why a continuously updating webpage wrecked the response times of the game if two could play the game simultaneously. Must be amazing to get real time response from small packets of data and not get out of synch with the other players. One learns something every day then. I guess the answer is to upgrade to a better/faster connection line.

On "Testmy.net" it say's I have around 3 mega bits a seconds. Not great, but should still be enough to do both. I swapped the 2nd PC's port on the router, and it improved to the extent that it now spikes up to 400 ping, but then comes down quite quickly.
We can't get fibre optic as we are one of the few roads that can't get it.
Thanks for your answers.
Just out of interest I did a speedtest at 'Testmy.net' and it consistently under read my results by about 80% and claiming that I might have problems and suggested a further scan to resolve problems.

I tried my speedtest again at

They gave a figure much more accurate and within 3% of each other.
Try these speedtest checkers out and see what results you get.
