no money in it for them!
I used to do voluntary work for the rspca and have never known them to refuse anonymous reports where I live (staffs) Maybe its different for different regions.
I myself have made anonymous reports and know that they have been seen to
bernnie's answer is cynical and is not in my experience. The rspca officers that I knew were wholly dedicated to there job and were only limited as to what they could do in any given situation by funding...they ARE a charity.
They came in for quite a bit of criticism recently here nailit

Their website specifically states that they will not accept anonymous reports, they say they will keep your details private when you give them but I know that to be untrue from past experience.
Daffy...I guess they would say they want to be sure that you are genuine and don't just have a grievance about those you wish to report....but..

They are fairly useless....I reported..with my name....a dog that was being left outside with no food or water for three days each week.

Because I could only hear the dog and not see it they said they weren't investigating just because the noise of a dog was annoying me.

Neighbours and I threw food over the high fence in the end...

They are a rubbish (putting it mildly) organisation and if I knew of any other to report this issue to I definitely would be overlooking RSPCA completely.

That is an almost identical issue to what I wish to report, but in this heat in a south facing garden I am very worried for the dog. I think the owner may have abandoned him but can't be sure. I might have to pluck up the courage to knock on the blokes door, I know he doesn't like me already after I reported him for letting the dog foul in the alleyway behind our houses. I could well be stepping into a fist in the face :-/
Daffy, I can only speak from experience and that experience was from some years ago, so policy's might of changed since then. As I said they ARE a charity and have to priotise. The officers I knew were often frustrated at the lack of convictions and the courts ruleing when they did get a conviction but like any organisation they were bound with red tape.
I have called the rspca out on at least 3 occasions that I can recall to injured pigeons (probably put them down) but i know off other occasions where they they have been called out to 'abandoned' dogs or cats and theres nothing they can do (in law) because somehow these animals are been fed.
Its crazy but at times their hands are tied by law, not what they would wish.
You can always ring your local dog warden instead - or if the dog is distressed, ring the Police.

The situation is the dog is always left out, he is chained up and usually is left with water. He barks a lot.
His owner gets in from work and always parks his beloved Alfa Romeo in the alleyway. The car hasn't been seen for 3 day, the dog is occasionally barking and can be heard panting from 2 doors away.
I just knocked on his front door and got no answer.

The RSPCA website are asking for all sorts of details I can't give, such as can I see the dog.... I can't see over the wall and gate at all as i'm too short.

Police told me to call RSPCA, dog warden said not their responsibility, call RSPCA.
Van't you just say that you can't see the dog, in the RSPCA report?
Not knowing I'm tempted to suggest that they just don't care. But a more likely guess could be that they can't afford to be triggered into malicious investigations ?
Question Author
Oh has just seen some young woman take the dog out on a lead, it seems at least someone is keeping an eye on it even if the owner is away. Phew!
Daffy they don't always take reports from caring people who give all their details. All they are interested in is the money.
They get a lot of malicious calls and some that are just not appropriate for the RSPCA. They will not investigate if an animal has food, water and shelter of any sort no matter how poor. What you need to know is that all the money raised publicly does NOT go to the local branches who actually look after animals, it goes to head office to pay for posh vehicles and offices and worst of all political campaigns for which they are being investigated. If you ever want to donate to the RSPCA buy food and take it to the nearest branch.
