"space exploration had certainly come a long way since the early days when the harmless sounding but deadly (8) and the (12) or the UFOs as they were known, terrorised unwary travellers"

answers are types of chewing gum, sweets, chocolates or chocolate bars, and somebody must know the answers please.!The 12 letter sweets are not a "flying saucer"(ie 2 lots of 6 words) because that comes elsewhere in the story.

Thank you all for trying to help. I appreciate that. Most of the questions are mine Boxtops, because despite help from a few ABers I still haven't found a sweet of 1 word of 12 letters that fits the criteria for the story, ie they look like UFOs, and at the same time are deadly and terrorised travellers. As with anything space themed, the setters imagination has got us all guessing this time, and I hate to be beaten, but I do like to support the Macmillan cause.
just had a mad idea is it 1/2 and not 12 as it could be e ts
only problem with that is i can't find e ts sweets ,back to the drawing board lol
I have found some sweets called Ghostbusters for 12 but not sure.
i've found a sweet called martian spray but again its 2 woods but 12 letters
Not really like UFOs but marshmallows has 12 letters. As does barleysugars but again not UFOs.

thank you for persisting to find an answer on my behalf.Just noticed I'm also missing"excitement could be felt across the(8) as the opening ceremony approached".I dare not post any more new requests,Although seems lots of people are struggling with this quiz too.
airwaves ? (chewing gum)
Poodledoo. Are you sure about UFOs?
"harmless sounding but deadly---- (8) and the---- (12) or the---(1,1,2) as they were known, terrorised unwary travellers"
I can think of something different for that particular gap in the story which could mean that my suggestion of 'marshmallows' could fit. I can also think of another suggestion for the 8 letter space too.
Are you happy with your answers or would you like more clues?
Scrap that bit about another 8 letter suggestion. I mis-read the story. The rest still applies though.

thank you knittynora for the 8 word answer, and I've got your point about UFOs and changed that to something else that now makes much more sense.
