I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird and having problems whentrying to email a 2007 Excel worksheet. I get the following message:

Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent using SMTP server smtp-mail.outlook.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact your network administrator.

I haven't the faintest idea what the above message is trying to say. Do I need to shooot my laptop?

My guess is that the file size is too big. Outlook.com's SMTP server automatically rejects attachments bigger than 10Mb. (To check on the file size, right-click on its icon and select 'Properties). If so, you'll either have to upload the file to a hosting site (and then send the intended recipient a link to it) or, far simpler, use an email account that doesn't...

How big is the spreadsheet, can you send any email?
Can you send other things / other e-mails ? It doesn't immediately suggest an issue with the spreadsheet attachment to me.

Although sometimes a particular e-mail can have problems in which case one can delete it to stop it trying to send and do it anew.

If so, you'll either have to upload the file to a hosting site (and then send the intended recipient a link to it) or, far simpler, use an email account that doesn't place a limit on the size of attachments. GMX (which I use) is about a zillion times better than Outlook.com and has no limit on the size of attachments. (You could either create a new account just for this one task or, better, use it as your main email address and then have all of your Outlook.com mail forwarded to it using the 'mail collector' facility):

Many thanks for your replies. I tried a couple of things, don't ask me what, but it was a case of third time lucky, and it went through!

It was quite a large spreadsheet - I'll make a note of Buenchoco's remarks for the future. But thank you all for your comments.
You can upload files to google drive and choose to have them private or shared with others. I'm not sure if there's a size limit though but it may be worth a try if this keeps happening.
