Thank youSam1960 and Fibonacci for the link. Looks like I have a decision to make :)
you're welcome,
still think it's Black Bun
good luck :)
I said Black bun initially but not sure. Black Bun is encased in pastry and in my book that's not strictly speaking a Cake.. Glad it's not my decision. Good luck with the quiz Fairlight x
hi mazie, the on line dictionary definition for "black bun" is almost identical to the clue given, but I do agree it is a difficult choice
Barm brack is a dark and fruity yeast-raised cake (barm means "yeast"; brack means "speckled").
It is Sam,I'm glad I'm not doing the quiz.. Just had a look at bara brith on google and it's not that dark.... Hey-Ho...
LOL ellie, just make it a bit more difficult ;o) xx
Just found this:

Bara brith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bara brith, sometimes known as "speckled bread" (the literal meaning of the original Welsh-language name), can be either a yeast bread enriched with dried fruit (similar to the Irish barmbrack) or something more like a fruitcake made with self-raising flour (no yeast).
Just had a look ellie, not as dark as black bun
if you take the dictionary definition..... Black Bun !!
but I agree 100% there are a few other contenders... d'oh... who would be a quiz setter lol
I would go with Bara brith as Black bun is, as mazie stated, encased in pastry.
