Hi
I'm about to buy a new PC as mine is about 10 yrs old and very slow. Has anyone got any advice on what sort of things I should have on it, such as how many GB etc? I've got an Ipad so I don't use my PC every day. I'd mainy use it for storing photos, music and using Excel & Word. Is 8GB a lot? What other things should I look for such as the speed of the processor etc? I want it to last me a good few years without having to upgrade the memory and so on.
Any advice much appreciated.

What is your budget ?.

You may have a 10yr old Comp, and there could possibly be ways to speed it up. What have you got ( make, model and operating system) and what size hard drive have you been using for the past 10yrs ?.

Hans.

Your ipad will have at least 16gb so that is double what the desktop will be. Why not store your photos and music on your ipad. You also get 5gb worth of space in iCloud. Pages & Numbers for ipad I think are now free (Word & Excel respectively).
I too have an old (8years) laptop running Windows Xp. I can count on one hand how many times in the last two years it has been used. Everything is now on my ipad.
I have difficulty in getting mine to run for more than 2 or 3 y

You are unlikely to write more than a million words in your lifetime
so a 750 mb disc will cover that

photies and muzak are much more greedy in terms of space and 8 seems small to me
A 8GB HDD is miniscule for a PC, you'll typically be looking at 500GB or more (mine has 1TB = 1000GB) for file storage.

But if it's 8GB of RAM (memory) that you mean then that would be good performance-wise.
We really need to know your budget, but there are some good deals out there.

Thanks for your replies. I was looking at a Hewlett Packard one in John Zlewis with 8GB RAM & 1TB for £400.

Sona....I feel sure you mean well but Registry Cleaners are Not to be trusted.
In fact they can do irreparable damage to a computer by removing important system operating files when doing a 'clean-up' job.
Furthermore any 'speed-up' will be so small it is unlikely to be noticed.
