Yes!
He's served 10 years and still hadn't been released.

What exactly is your point?

If it's 'he only got 8 years' or 'life should mean life' you clearly don't understand the workings of our sentencing system.

13 life sentences but with a rider of minimum 8 years.

Do you really need that explaining as to why people are disgusted Zehul?

The fact he was not let out, well not deliberately, is not the point. Theoretically he could have been.
/Theoretically he could have been. /

But in Reality he wasn't - that's the point

What I don't understand is, IF they were gradually preparing him for release, why did he abscond?
ymb.........its one of those rare times that we are in full agreement it would seem !

What I am still puzzled by is why he was given 13 x life sentences, and at the same time the Judge said that he should only serve at least 8 years ?

That might or might not be appropriate for someone who was given 1 life sentence, but what was the point of giving him another 12, if he can get out after just 8 years ? The public might be forgiven for thinking that when some one is awarded 13 life sentences, that person would never get out, ever.

In addition, he had a history of absconding from prison before the 13 life sentences were awarded, which makes the 8 year bit even more difficult to understand, and his incarceration in an open prison, impossible to understand.

How many more people are there in Britain that are in the same boat ? Is it any wonder that most ex-cons go on to commit more crimes ? We might as well put revolving doors on our prisons and have done with it !
it's just been reported that "Skull Cracker" may be linked to a building society robbery in Sunbury this morning.......

"The fact he was not let out, well not deliberately"

But he WAS let out deliberately, youngmaf. He was on Temporary Licence (aka "Day Release"). He simply failed to return.

Anyway, it seems he's been caught having committed yet another armed robbery of a building society:

Perhaps he'll get another "Life" sentence (concurrent, of course) on top of the thirteen he's already serving. That'll teach him to go AWOL!!!
He has nothing to lose really now, does he? Although i now understand how life sentences work, i don't think they make any sense- or being able to serve them concurrently.
Perhaps they could try chaining him up this time, like a mad dog ?
