Hi there

Does anyone know when the term 'hook' first started being used in boxing, in the UK, please? Or does anyone have any pointers to references which could advise?

Many thanks.

The OED gives the earliest known printed reference as "After Smith had put a left hook on the chin the issue was not in doubt", printed in the Daily News of 9 November 1898.
