Hi folks,

Do I need an INternational Drivers Licence to rent a car in France?

And if so, how would I go about getting one, and at what cost?

I'm travelling in 4 weeks - is that a long enough lead time?

Sorry, that's three questions really. Thanks in advance!

No you don't need an international licence to drive in France. Do you want to hire in France or in England and drive to France?

Either way just google for "car hire" or "car hire in France" and it will bring up several different sites to try.

Good Luck and have fun.

......but if you have the new style british licence you have to take the paper part aswell as the photo card. If you have the old style paper only licence thats fine on its own.

It depends what nationality your original licence is. If it's a British one, then the answer is no.

For the record you can get one on the spot in large post offices for (I think) 6. You'll need a recent photo (?2), You can also get them by post from the AA or RAC for slightly less - about a week. They are valid for one year.

If you have a foreign licence you may need an international one, and it would only be obtainable in your home country.

thanks for this.

mkt: I do not have the paper part (not sure if I ever had one). Is this going to be a problem then?

Potentially yes - it depends how conscientious and knowledgeable the hire company are - and also how fussy the police are if you get stopped.

You may well get away with it but you will be breaking the law (as you are here) by not having both parts.
