I haven't used AB for ages because every few seconds one nuisance called RELATED SEARCHES comes in from the left and GREAT DEALS from the right. Cancelling them removes them for only a few seconds. Does anyone know how to get rid of them so that I don't have to abandon AB after all these years?

I don't know what culture would best deal with this... maybe repost in Editor's Blog, what's where most of the complaints about intrusive ads seem to go
Yes...try Editors blog. Then he'll know to get the techies on it. Give as much detail as you can.
Please see my post here (which I'm confident will deal with your problem as well):

Yes that makes sense, folks, and I've done that. But I thought that one of my friends (?) on S&C might help. Thanks.
IThis definitely sounds like malware rather than an AB issue. Follow Buenchico's advice and see if that fixes it.
use firefox

Thanks, Buenchico. I did everything you suggest and after 40 minutes of scanning I wasn't offered the buttons you name. So things just held fire.
I'll have to start again, but not yet!

Well you must have the only computer in the country without some sort of malware lurking in it! (I've never known anyone do a scan and not find anything!).

You should have been presented with a screen like this one:

Clicking on 'Show Results' should then take you to something like this:
http://www.removethisvirus.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/remove-xaven-malwarebytes.png
You then need to put a tick against everything there. (If there's a lot, click on the first item to highlight it, then right-click and select 'Check all'). Then click on 'Remove Selected'.

It might be worth another try!
OH happens to me regularly Buenchico, but that's a result of regular scans.

Sorry, Bienchico, I obviously wasn't clear. The scan certainly found lots and lots of things to put right but I wasn't offered the means of going on from there and eliminating them.

Have you checked the images (in my links above) that show you how to do it?
