Just wondering if it's much better before paying an extra £70! Thanks

I went from a standard screen resolution iPhone to one with a retina screen and I certainly could tell the difference.

Whether it is worth the extra £70 probably depends on how you intend to use it. If you will be watching or making films, or photos, then I would pay it.
I have an ipad2 the newer versions with the retina screen have a much more clear image. As gromit says if you want it for photography etc it would be worth it. If I was buying something new I would pay the extra £70. You never know you may get into photography.

Thanks guys, very helpful x
Apple will always find ways to make money out of people. Try the both of then side-by-side and see if the difference is worth £70.

Better still, go to Tesco, or similar and try out some of the much cheaper tablets that are on the market. I have a Samsung Galaxy TAB and are very pleased with it.
Before the Retina Display came out no iPad owner was complaining about the screen quality.
Unless they are side by side you won't notice and you certainly don't NEED the Retina Display.

I have a Nexus 7 and love it
Another thing that has occurred to me. One of the big selling points apparently of the new, more expensive Pad Air was that it is much thinner than the old. Like hc4361, I can't ever remember an Ipad user complaining that the Ipad was "too thick" !
Apple brought out the iPad 4 years ago and it was instantly popular. They could have just left it as it was and not changed it. But instead they constantly improve it.
Things like battery life:
Hardware form factor
Weight
Screen resolution
Services integration
Software

Will constantly be revised.

I did not complain about the screen on my original iPhone. But after using a retina screen, if I look at a non retina screen now, it looks rough.
Gromit...Apple do all the things that you say they do to entice people to buy a new Ipad, even though there is nothing wrong with the one they had last week....a very common marketing tool.

By the way, "Retina Display" is a meaningless phrase...its just a made up name for a slightly clearer screen that the one that went before.

I got the retina one :)

Retina display is a brand name, but it is not meaningless. It refers to a screen density where the individual pixels are no longer disernable to the human eye at a typical viewing distance for that device.
