About 5 mins ago I received a phone call from a female, with a foreign accent telling me that she was from Microsoft, and they had noticed that my computer was running slow.I may not be the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but knew this was not so because , last night I switched off my machine prior to moving it to another room later today.Brenda.

It's a scam.

They are looking to hack into your PC and get your personal info - if she rings again, hang up.

Microsoft do not, as far as I know, cold-call customers - why would they?
It's an old scam.
It's a regulat thing Brenda, the clue to these calls, it takes a min for the caller top speak just put the phone down.
my mate has had this call 4 times and 4 times he has told them he does not own a computer

the last one told him to fluff off
Brenda, it's an old scam which is rearing it's head again on both sides of the pond....

Hang up, don't give them any information, or even better - say you do not own a computer - this way they will not know there is one in your home.
Its a scam,
I have had this a few times , I always reply with
" I'm sorry love, I haven't got a computer"
to which they usually apologise and say they have the wrong number.

I had this call as well. When I said I didn't own a computer they hung up so fast it hurt my ear. Sprkles62 was lucky to get an apology.
My record for stringing one of these scammers along is just under 30 minutes ... they did seem a bit cross when I eventually asked them to email me a picture of themselves so I could recognise them on our date ...
Also calls supposedly from Virgin with the same scam.

I always hang up on these type of calls.
Tell them you use a Mac. They will drop you like a hot brick
I heard somewhere of a person who upon receiving such a call would respond by saying something along the lines of...." Oh yes. I have been in contact with Microsoft and have been awaiting a call from a Technician. Microsoft has given me a code number and advised me to request it from whomsoever calls on the matter to ensure that the call is genuine."

Hans.
obvious scam -

just say something like ..... that is odd its not on !
and replace hand set

Thank you everyone for your advice. Brenda.
I don't mince my words if I think its a scam I tell them to "hiss off", just because I am a little old lady doesn't mean I have to be a nice one.
Hi Brenda
Definitely a scam - 3 weeks ago my mate spoke to a similar "Microsoft" lady who was advising him that his PC was running slow and eventually after a while my mate mentioned that he only had an apple PC - SHE immediately hung up on MY mate!!!!!
