I had a stye a while back and remembering a treatment from childhood went and asked the chemist for boracic lint. She looked at me as thought I'd asked for medicinal leeches or a blood-letting bowl. I can't remember if it was effective, but is it no longer used?

You can get boric acid powder easily and dip ordinary lint in a solution -
it's quite a good, mild antiseptic.
Reminds me of the time I went to the Post Office and asked for sealing wax Sandy. Young assistant didn't have a clue what I was talking about.
