They vary.......but anything from 50---170 is normal.

A very interesting read Chris thank you x

Thanks for replying Sqad.

Haemoglobin 10
Iron 4 (a lot less than 50)
very variable - the reason why you cant find a sensible account for normal levels of iron is that the smart guys in the game ...... can't agree.

that is because serum levels reflects the body content badly

and a modern equivalent might be - to measure the depth of the River Parrett in Zumerzet and then use it to estimate the amount of standing water in the somerset levels.
Although there are a couple of differing method for measuring the blood iron level.........4 is low in anyone's book.

it looks like an iron deficiency anaemia, which may need explaining....you are losing iron(bleeding) or you are not absorbing it.

Peter that explains it very clearly to a novice like me thank you.

Sqad thank you for your replies.
Peter P - serum iron is indeed fairly unreliable and can vary at different times of day - it's just a snapshot in a moment of time - but serum ferritin levels (see Buenchico's link above) give a good correlation with the body's iron stores in most cases.
I presume arwyn is talking about serum ferritin levels.
Question Author
Slanley sorry I've no idea, G.P's words were "arwyn you are quite severely deficient in iron".
I don't know why (maybe to sound clever ha ha) but I asked "what is the number".
It sounds low for either serum iron or ferritin... but I'm sure your GP will do all the investigations necessary, and start you on some treatment.
