Dimmable Led

Hi,

I am currently having my kitchen fitted and I am having down-lights put in the kitchen/diner. I need 16 in total.

I have heard/read LED is much cheaper in terms of running costs than halogen but the are much more expensive to buy to begin with.

To make things more complicated I need dimmable ones.

Can any one recommend the best LED bulb and fitting to buy that are dimmable.

If a domestic situation, how much would you save per year using LED rather than halogen ? Would it cover the difference in up front cost ?

That is what I am wondering? I heard it would make a massive difference. Also "The builder" do you have any recommendations for fittings that would go with that bulb. I am doing a whole house so in total going to need about 48 bulbs and down-lights

That's the beauty of them, Andy.......... 1 watt LED as a replacement for 50 watts halogen. Almost no heat generated, so no fire-hoods or any of that old nonsense :o)))

Everything I have read though says the fire rated part is to stop smoke, fire etc going through the hole into the room upstairs. Not the heat of the bulb. Is that not true?

Sorry Andy... didn't read your comment properly.
Yes... Fire Safety (Part B) and Sound Transmission (Part E) of the Building Regs.

This is one of those fuzzy, grey areas. If yours is a "new-build", then the Regs would apply. That wouldn't apply necessarily to existing dwellings.
Building Regs compliance can't be forced retrospectively.
However, if changes are being made that might affect the "integrity" of the ceiling, then a case could be argued that the changes should comply.

Between you and me... that would effectively render all sale of non fire-rated fittings illegal. Welcome to the world of Building Regs interpretation :o)
