Hard Disk Drive Question

I bought a Sony HDD and an LG flat screen TV (I don't know if it's LED or LCD without going to look at the manual) about a year ago. After a couple of months or so, the HDD went wrong and it was repaired under guarantee. For most of the past 12 months, when I switch the TV off the HDD has switched itself off too, but for the past couple of weeks this has not happened. I have not changed anything. Does anybody know which way it is supposed to work, i.e is the HDD supposed to switch off when the TV is switched off? Any idea why it should have changed its MO?

I believe where turning off one thing results in a connected thing going to standby or off, it has to be because the connected thing is monitoring and knows to turn off when there seems nothing connected to its data cable. I'm making a reasonable guess here. My suspicion is that if it is supposed to happen (and the fact that it has been doing so suggests it should) and now stopped it is most likely to be the hard disk monitoring that would have failed. Although I guess it's not impossible that the TV started still looking connected when it no longer is. Take a web search for the hard disk you have, see if the spec/functionality includes auto standby.
Just to be on the safe side Bert always switch everything off manually.

Ron.
