I am 30 and it would appear that I am thinning ever so slightly at my crown.
Not receding at the front at all though.
Does anyone have experience of thinning hair and how long will it be until I get the "egg in the nest look"? I am not that vain but at only 30 I am a bit gutted to discover this.
Do any of the shampoos (such as Alpecin) help or slow down hair loss or have I basicall had it!!

It's very individual, jd, but inherited through your mother's side, so look at your maternal grandfather. I don't honestly think there's much you can do. But it's probably more obvious to you, than to anyone else.

The worst bit, (so they tell me), is having to pay a Search Fee when you go for a Haircut!

My OH is going a bit thin at the crown. Barely any difference in the last 10 years. He's almost 40.

Thats what people have said to me "Look at your Grandad he still has a good head of hair" Perhaps to me it looks thinner because I have noticed it it! Hopefully it will be a very gradual process...

Not at the number 1 point yet! Just a bit "whispy" at the crown
It's very gradual. It seems to happen faster if it thins at the front. Don't worry about it.

I think for a bloke, as we dont wear make up, fart about with ourselves or bother too much with vanity, our hair (or lack of it) can be a big issue for some especialy as you cant do very much about it.
I started thinning and receding at the front from my mid 30s, to be honest I never worried about it, I'm now 56 and still have a fair bit of hair and still losing it slowly. learn to accept it, I actually think hair on the head is a bit of a nuisance, I would be more than happy to go completely bald, in fact I used to shave it bald at one point, I would have continued to shave it but its a lot of messing about that I really cant be bothered with, I just keep it short and live with it.

Hi jd,
I'm surprised no one has mentioned health here? Are you o.k in your health? Certain conditions / medications can cause thinning of the hair ... http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Hair-loss/Pages/Causes.aspx
