This was a very clever idea by Samuel. Despite getting the theme quite quickly and also deducing the quotation, it took me quite a while to solve all the clues and to construct the grid. But there was no coming-to-a-halt time; things just moved along slowly but surely.

Still making progress with this one as I've had a visitor here till a few hours ago. I got the quotation and theme quite early and have got the top part together quite well, but still stuck on quite a few clues. I think I know what the finished grid should look like, so I'll keep going.
I am very curious about this puzzle. Can someone tell me how to access it? Many thanks!
The Listener crossword is accessed by subscribing to The Times on line, or by purchasing the Times newspaper on Saturdays.
If it is just this particular fine puzzle you would like to attempt, post an email address on here and you will receive a copy I'm sure.
I wonder if someone could help me please. I generally photocopy the Listener crossword from the Times at my local library during the week, as I don't often buy that paper. However someone has torn off the bottom of the relevant page, probably to take away a puzzle on the back. I am missing just one or two clues at the end of column 1. I have "Date thrusting blade(7)" - but then missing 1 or 2. I have all down clues OK. Could someone kindly tell me the next 2 clues after "Date.." please? Many thanks for help.
Not sure how the columns were split, but I think the clues you are looking for are:

Gold medallist gets finance in the end for first new banger (6)
Balance resentment (8)

Do you already have:

Lung instrument took off (4)

?
Yes, those are the 2 missing, I have lung instrument clue at top of next columm. Thank you very much jim360. Whoever tore the paper also tore out the complete previous page, I told library staff but don't suppose they can do much to stop someone surreptitiously removing bits of the paper. Thanks again.
