If I buy a mobile phone is the provider duty bound to provide me with a signal where I live ? I am asking this question because like a lot of people I live in an area where there is no phone signal being detected from any of the major suppliers.

Nope, if their coverage maps indicate availability in your area and then it turns out you can't get a signal you might be able to get out of the contract without penalty.

Thanks Fitzer. I am however on PAYG.

So you bought a phone knowing you had no reception? I think caveat emptor applies.
You should have checked the coverage before you bought the phone.
Again, if their coverage map indicates 'good' coverage, not marginal then you might be able to recover the cost of the phone as you were led to believe that it would work, otherwise not a hope I'm afraid. That being said I know their coverage maps are hedged about with all manner of qualifications regarding 'not being a guarantee etc. etc.'
How do yu check the coverage, is there a website ?
You can ring the suppliers and they'll check your area. They are honest- we were told no by one of them.

No I have recently moved into this area from elsewhere & find I cannot use my phone. I am still of course paying for the privilege of not being able to use it.

Further to my last post I should have told you that because it is a Blackberry I do receive my emails on it but cannot make or receive calls or texts.

Not much can be done, ron - we get that a lot round here with different providers, as the signals vary wildly if hills and cliffs get in the way. We were using dongles for our work laptops at one point, and had to change provider.
