in view of the likelihood of unrest, should the Home Secretary not have stepped in and banned Mark Duggan's virgil set to take place today outside Tottenham police station?

Hook line and sinker.

Surely that was too obvious, even to you?

No comment, let's put a stop to this non constructive bit of fun now shall we?

Is your reason for wanting to ban the vigil to prevent a riot?

Or is it just to punish them?
What purpose is the vigil supposed to serve, other than continuing to ferment unrest against the police? The case is done and dusted.
//the case is done and dusted//

errm, no it isn't, round one has just concluded. a judicial review will constitute round 2.

// Well it is obvious that either walking or marching, they will make their own way there, how else? //

The Police station is on the main road. I suspect most will arrive by car or taxi. The rest by bus. If they live a short distance away, they may possibly walk.

A vigil usually means lighting candles and moping about for several hours. Often there is a religious element to it, prayers, meditation etc. It is totally different than a demonstration. It could descend into a demonstration, but the family have asked for it not to do.

I have heard of demonstrations being banned, but never a vigil.
Ah - OK, mushroom. Thanks.

I can now visualise Far Left and Far right groups now rushing out to buy in huge stocks of candles. :0)

Yes and we all know Mark Duggan's aunt's feelings on the streets.

.

Banning Virgil ? Oh no not that !

I think you can ban something that is legal - and that is what (banning it) makes it illegal.

Even OAPs demonstate, AoG and you should think about a ban for anything in case of violence... until it starts. IN the OAPs case, the p'lice would know trouble was brewing when hit by a hail of false teeth.
and yes I would support a demonstration protesting illegal detention of suppose terrorists. [ should it occur ]

The Irish terrorist fiasco - you know when peopel spent more than 10 y in prison [each!] for crimes they rather obviously didnt commit - leaves a big scar.

/// a person who is excessively concerned with minor details and rules or with displaying academic learning. ///
It seems both were peaceful.
I agree that his family have a right to mourn his death but had he been my son I would also feel quite a degree of shame too and certainly would not be organising a public vigil.
I can't help but being reminded of the outcry by the friends of Jimmy Saville when the first accusations surfaced about him
all appeared to go as planned.
Now that the vigil riot has subsided, perhaps we should ignore the sideshow and concntrate on the hordes of Buldarians and Romanians raping and pillaging across the UK.
