Hello everyone, hope you all had a good Christmas.

Does anyone know if schools are allowed to ban girls from wearing trousers?

I would have thought that this was discrimination.

Anyone out there had experience of this or know of any good links?

Many thanks

Up to individual schools apparently - http://www.equalityhumanrights.com/advice-and-guidance/before-the-equality-act/guidance-for-students-pre-october-2010/being-treated-with-respect/school-uniform/

There was a news item earlier this year about schoolboys opting for skirts in the hottest weather - something to do with the school could ban them from wearing shorts, but if skirts were allowed for the girls, it would be discrimination to ban them for the boys. So good luck!
Ooh, snap!

Many thanks, folks. This is exactly the info I was looking for.
My eldest lass is going to big school in Sept and the school we wanted has a no trousers rule...I see a fight ahead.

Thanks again.

Good luck, but having a fight is not a promising start to the relationship between child, family and new school.
If you want that school then you take their rules, don't like their rules then your eldest child will have to go elsewhere.
If it's a good school and the rule is already known by you then is it not incredibly petty to start your relationship with the school over something as stupid as whether she wears trousers or not? I would have thought academic success would be much more important in hunting out a school for your child.

Very interesting that so many assumed that the fight was going to be between me and the school and not me and my daughter!
Why would you be worried about possible discrimination then? I didn't want to go to my secondary school because it was all girls, mh friend was going somewhere else and the uniform was brown.... I expect you can imagjne the result of that tantrum!
i personally think that girls not being allowed to wear trousers if they chose is shocking (well perhaps not shocking exactly, i just can't understand the reasoning behind it)
If it was me i'd certainly query it, but i don't think i would send my daughter to an awful school just so she could wear trousers ifshe wanted. If you all really want that school, you'll probably have to accept it
