Having no close family I've spent Chrismas alone for many years, but receive several cards, good wishes and some presents. Are any other ABers in a similar situation and what do you do at Christmas? I don't want to be gloomy but cannot help feeling relieved when it's all over.

i don't celebrate xmas, seems a bit silly just me and the cat, doesn't bother me though, im quite happy watching rubbish all day

a lie-in, followed by the day lazing around watching the haunted fishtank and sipping sherry all day - alone.....bliss
For reasons I've already posted I'm not a big Christmas person, having said that I'm lucky in having a very close family so I go through the motions and pretend.
It's xmas every day for me. I enjoy the solitary freedom to enjoy presents whenever I want, and to give presents to friends and relatives when I choose. Last 2 weeks of the year, though, I enjoy my version of a "Christmas dinner" almost every evening!

There are probably hundreds of people who spend Christmas alone. I just hope TV shows something a bit more inspiring that a cookery demonstration.
agree with mccfluff 100% most boring day of the year!
It's just another day of the year as far as I'm concerned, and I neither send nor receive cards or presents. Since nowhere is open there's no reason to venture outdoors so I won't see, let alone speak to, anyone.
Oh you poor thing, i would like it on my own at this moment in time. I need the break. Some local pubs do lunches, why don't you look into it, and go there. If you were near me, i would have you at mine, or visit you with a nice bottle and mince pies.
I'm not alone but I am.....my (youngish) kids are not in this country, my mother and one of my sisters and her partner are. Not quite the same thing as you, Coldicote......

First of all and, surely your fall back, there will be a lot of company on here to share with you as the day rambles on.

Secondly, if you want the razz and glitz, are there any Christmas parties going locally, groups such as Rotary or the Lions who may twin you up....if you want that.

Whatever, there are folk around, rest assured. It would be nice if the Ed could give us a site that we could send e-cards into, so folk like you are not forgotten from the multitude of us AB ijiots out there, whatever our numptiness factor!
Or, through the Ed, a pairing up service, so that lonely ABers could group up and make a booking, if not Xmas day, then to a date close to.

An interesting exchange of thoughts here, thank you. Christmas is a fun-time for kids and families, and with religious implications for those who see it that way. Loneliness is something one gets used to and may not like speaking of because it sounds like self-pity. Best Wishes for 2014.
If i wasn't at my mum's, i would also be happy to have ABers over who wanted company. My sister and i also visit a few clients that don't have family, even if they're not due a call. Just to say happy Christmas and get them a cup of tea. I think if i was in that position, i would look for a local homeless shelter for volunteering.
Wish you all, all the best xxx
I thought about asking a colleague who has no family to join us - but she has a cat and probably wants to spend it with that.
I have spent a Christmas alone by choice and I quite enjoyed it.
My daughter reluctantly let me spend it at home but I haven't since as she said it spoilt her Christmas knowing I was at home on my own.

Shihtzublue - exactly the same happened to me one year
Loved it Archers omnibus, sound of music and whole bottle of wine to myself. My children were little and would never let me do it again
To the many carers out there a day to be entirely on one's own would be a luxury I think.
