Fruit and veg bought from the supermarket would've already been washed, would it not? Is there any need for us to do it?

If it's from the loose display it has then been handled by everyone else, so washing it is probably a good idea. Even the stuff in packets may not have been washed properly unless it says "washed and ready to eat" on it, and many fruits are waxed or treated to extend shelf life.
