Why do people (myself included), feel compelled to pace purposefully as they take/make phonecalls? Any thoughts?

I don't know if I pace purposefully, but I do wander around when I'm on the phone. No idea why. I just have the urge to get up, that I don't have at other times.
It's the "look at me" effect, you would never walk about using a fixed phone, it aso causes frustration as it breaks up when you move about.
Not something I've ever done - I've always thought it's a bit odd. I don't pace when I take a call at work.

I don't pace, I doodle!
I used to watch people walking in the street chatting away on their mobile phones, stepping into the road without looking and being hit by a cyclist going the wrong way down the street, great times.
Not the pacing up and down that intrigues me, it's the increase in vocal volume that people adopt as soon as the phone rings.

Why do people have to shout when using their mobiles?
Depends where I am. At home I'm a pacer, outside I standstill. Never thought about it before until you asked.
A long time ago I heard that if you walk or stand when you are on the phone, especiailly if it is a business call, it makes you feel and seem more confident and able to "close the deal".

Probably something to do with increasing blood flow around the body and taking the mind off any feelings of anxiety by distracting it.

Not sure how true it is though :-)
I don't pace. All my phone calls are made/taken whilst sitting down.
Hi Cailin, I don't think our brains ever switch off from multi tasking so we feel a need to pace. It's much more interesting to pace than be static. Also I think movement helps us concentrate on the conversation as the act of walking to a degree blocks out the things that are happening around us.
I pace a lot on the phone, but we also have a fixed phone which I find very restricting now(didn't give it a thought before)Me walking all over the room does get on the wife's nerves though!!
