I bought two Pyracantha bushes from Lidl on Monday. They were reduced to four pounds each. Both of them were smothered in bright yellow berries.
I planted them yesterday in two different areas of the garden and have just spent a delightful hour watching two blackbirds systematically stripping them.

I bought them for the birds and the birds seem to appreciate them. How lovely. I'm really pleased with myself.

Yes, shoota? Do you have a cat?

Pusskin, help me out here. Don't leave me on my own. Go and fetch some Pyracantha and pass me a bit.
I do, but that is not my point.
With this attitude you will soon be applying for a shotgun certificate and be off harvesting your own game casserole.
Innit?

I never mentioned shooting anything! What attitude?
Falconry - the pursuit of feathered and furred game (+ cats) with a falcon is one of the country sports, along with shooting.....
That attitude.

I've done falconry. Harris hawks. Fish pie for tea, caught them earlier.
The holly and hawthorn are groaning under the weight of berries, wonder when the redwings will come to strip them both?

I shall dig out the old pyracantha next year as it seriously gets in the way of window cleaning now. My bird visitors are well fed throughout the winter.
Question Author
Good luck with digging it out, choux. You might need some armour for protection.

I have holly and hawthorn bushes too. As you say, there are loads of berries on them. It's funny how the two blackbirds made a bee line for my two new plants. I wonder if the colour attracted them?
No problem Tilly. When I decide something has to go - it goes.
Question Author
I like that attitude, choux! Go get 'em.
