warm the iron & scour with brillo pad
Question Author
thank's does the brillo not scratch
Don't scour with brillo pad. Most modern irons have a non stick coating which will be scoured off with a brillo, this makes it burn fabric more often and cause worse sticky soleplate.
You can buy pastes to apply to the soleplate to remove the gunk.

daffy and tamborine thank's
I use a plastic scourer, it doesn't seem to do any harm.
I bought a tube of soleplate cleaner from my local sewing shop, but supermarkets have them too. You use it while the iron is warm, then wipe it off.
I tried lots of things when my iron burned a jumper and it stuck fast. In the end I tried coca cola and it worked, took me about 5 minutes of rubbing with a cloth, but it did the trick.
