Pro Rata Query!

Hi, was just wondering what it means when an advertisement for a job says 22,000 per annum "pro rata" ? For instance an admin job in a school...does it mean that if you were to work every week for the whole year then that is how much you get but since you only work 40 weeks then you get 22,000/52 x 40 = (16,923)

If this is the case does this 16,923 then get divided by 12 and thats how much you get monthly regardless of holidays or do you only get paid for the time that you are working? ie 16, 923 divided irregularly across the year (obviously i know you'll also be taxed!).

Thanks everyone! I feel quite dumb asking!

Pro rata means you get paid for the time you work - the salary is based on an annual rate. If you are unsure, ask them for a breakdown - that's a standard quesation, no need to be embarassed.

The advertised salary is per annum for a 40 hour week. In other words if you were employed in a full time capacity this is the most you could earn. obviously at a school you wouldn't get paid for the school holidays you weren't working so may end up working, lets say half that. so the most you would earn for the hours you worked would be 11,000 It would be paid monthly and probably split across the year, so in effect you would still be paid even though part of the time you would be "on school holidays".

In a school it works like this for non- teaching staff.

No. of weeks in school year+ no. of weeks holiday = working weeks. Then divide annual salary by 52 and multiply by working weeks.

Say 40+4=44. 22000:- 52 x 44=18615.38 per annum. Monthly salary is therefore say 18615 divided by 12= 1551.25

This situation occurs in schools because the pay scales for administration staff is the same as for other council administrative staff who obviously work a 52 week year and not a reduced working year like school staff.
