I use Family Tree Maker. I started on the free version but have since paid and upgraded to the standard version. You can buy the FTM deluxe which comes with loads of free CD's but these are not worth the extra cost in my opinion as the info can be found elsewhere.

You can get free programs which are just as good, I have used Legacy in the past and you can get a free version of this from HERE or there is PAF (Personal Ancestral File) from HERE .

Also check out the Family History magazines in WH Smiths, they often give out CD's with the software on for free. I have had both Legacy and Family Tree Maker from that source.

It really depends on what you want to do with your info.

As CheekyChops says - there are excelent free ones with good features.
Some programmes offer photo-editing software to clean up old photos - some offer fancier chart drawing capabilities.

If you are in the UK - and you are thinking of buying one with lots of record CD's - such as social security death indexes -
these relate to America mostly.
Unless your ancenstry is across the pond - they won't be a lot of help to you.

Have you tried the GenUki pages? You'll get lots of advice there!
