Are you talking about potatoes dauphinoise?

Layers of thinly sliced potato, salt, pepper, garlic if wanted, and cheese, cover with double cream, add a final spinkling of cheese and cook until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is brown and bubbling.

Basically.

many thanks, that's it. off to cook it now!

that is gratin dauphinoise, very nice many recipes available if you google that word. usually you need to parboil the potatoes first otherwise it takes forever to cook. you should use waxy type potatoes not the starchy kind that are good for mash and chips etc. i used charlotte potatoes once worked very well they are a small new variety just parboil then slice put with cream galic and grated cheese, bake, but i would recommend using a recipe.

A julienne of leek is a rather nice addition to the Dauphinoise ingredients. (just for a change !!)
